Ground Cumin

Earthy Sweetness and Warmth

Authentic Cumin from Turkey

Delicious spice to season meats, chicken, fish, vegetables, delicious on fried foods.

A favorite herb of Middle Eastern and Mexican cuisines, Cumin can be found in everything from chili to rice and its distinctive taste is appealing to many. It is also the staple ingredient in curry and chili powders. Originally sourced from Iran and the Mediterranean, Cumin is a small seed that is a member of the parsley family. The seed has a distinct flavor and warm aroma. Today it is most commonly grown in India and is mainly associated with Indian and Mexican foods.

The history of Cumin dates back over 5,000 years. The ancient Egyptians used it as a spice in their foods as well as during the mummification process. The Romans also used Cumin as a spice and the ancient Greeks kept a dish of it on the dinner table, a practice that continues today in Morocco.

In the Middle Ages, a time when spices were relatively scarce, Cumin was one of the most common spices. It was thought to promote love and fidelity and was reputed to keep lovers and chickens from wandering off. People carried it to weddings and walked around with it in their pockets. Married soldiers were even sent off to battle with a loaf of freshly baked cumin bread.

Today, Cumin is cultivated and grown in many countries including Malta, India, Sicily, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Turkey. It is quite easy to grow and adapts well to many climates. While everyday use of this spice has changed since the the Middle Ages, it is making its return as international cusine and spicy foods are making a comeback in popularity and to our dinner tables.
