Nutmeg also known as myristica fragrans, is the seed of the nutmeg tree, a tropical, dark-leaved evergreen tree. Nutmeg trees are native to the Spice Islands of Indonesia and produce not only nutmeg, but mace as well. Nutmeg is the seed itself while mace is the grated outer covering.
Nutmeg has a distinctive pungent fragrance and a warm slightly sweet taste; it is used to flavor a variety of dishes, from baked goods, desserts, potatoes, meats, sauces, vegetables, and such beverages as eggnog, hot chocolate and coffee.
